Coldplay Getting Ready for Summer Tour

Coldplay is thawing out and getting ready for an upcoming album and a summer tour. The band performed at the Beacon Theater Tuesday, marking their first concert in Manhattan in three years.

"It's got to be flattering to us that you still remember us after all this time away," the group's lead singer, Chris Martin, told the crowd, which remained standing for the entire 90-minute concert.

The band played songs from their new album, "X&Y," which will be released June 7, and also played some of their hits, including "In My Place," "Yellow" and the Grammy-winning "Clocks."

The concert was taped for AOL, which will broadcast the concert on AOL Music Live!, its weekly concert series on the Internet, on the day the album is released.

Midway throught the concert, Martin got a bit camera-shy.

"All these cameras make us feel like we're on `The Apprentice,'" Martin joked.

The U.S. leg of band's "Twisted Logic" tour kicks off Aug. 4 in Hartford, Conn.

Songwriters Honor Simon at BMI Event

Dozens of songwriters gathered Tuesday night to celebrate the BMI Pop Music Awards honoring Paul Simon and others. But some couldn't place the name of the organization that keeps tabs on their royalties.

"BMI. What is it? Business Management? Broadcast Management?" mused Mario Winans, an honoree for his U.S. and U.K. smash, "I Don't Wanna Know." "It's funny. I'm signed to BMI and I don't even know what it is."

Nineteen-year-old singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee said: "Hmm... Bonnie McKee Incorporated?"

The correct answer was Broadcast Music, Inc., an American performing-rights organization that represents more than 300,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers.

"Most importantly, they collect the money," Patrick Michael Smith said, laughing but only half-joking. Smith said BMI helped him to develop his talent and connect with artists outside of his circle of colleagues.

BMI also assures that Smith, who co-wrote Usher's "Yeah," receives royalties from record sales and radio play, as well as other uses of his work such as TV commercials and downloaded ringtones for cellular phones.

BMI has collected plenty for husband-and-wife songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, whose "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" is the most-performed song in BMI's entire repertoire.

At Tuesday night's honors at the Regent Beverly Wilshire hotel, "Feeling" was honored for passing the 10 million-performance mark.

Mann rattled off some of the team's other hits: "On Broadway," "Here You Come Again," "Somewhere Out There," "Sometimes When We Touch," "We Got To Get Out of This Place," "Kicks," "Hungry," "He's Sure the Boy I Love," "Uptown," "New World Coming," "Make Your Own Kind of Music," and "I Just Can't Help Believing."

"That's incredible," observed Weil. "I'm very proud you remembered all of those."

"As I get older," Mann said, "I forget more names."

Grammy-winner Paul Simon, who accepted the BMI Icon Award for career achievement, did not speak to media or offer an acceptance speech. However, he did perform the song "Slip Slidin' Away".

Maroon 5, Brian Wilson, Joss Stone and Yolanda Adams also performed Simon's songs in the tribute.

Simon called the tributes "very touching."

"Great music is great music, and stands the test of time," said Grammy-winning gospel-soul singer Adams. "How many of us know Bridge Over Troubled Water? . . . You think about this man and he has a career that spans over 30 years."
